The Sculpture Process

Below is a sculpture that was started in December 2010 from a block of stone & the
metamorphosis that it goes through to achieve being a sculpture.

Quotes attributed to Michelangelo:
"Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it."

"The more the marbles wastes, the more the statue grows."

"Carving is easy, you just go down to the skin and stop."

Stone Specifications for Sculpture below: Indiana Limestone, 18" x 24" x 36" tall 1500 lbs.

Carving Start. Top emerging from stone. Note drawing on stone.	Heavy stone sawing to start the sculpture process. Hole drilling to establish reference points.	Front View - More stone removal. More Hole Drilling to align front image with rear image.	Front View - Start defining masses.	Front/Side View - Start defining masses.

Front View - Drilled lower reference point. Defining Middle level.	Back/side View - Hollowed out between 2nd & 3rd level.		Front View - Defined middle level. Starting on lower level.	Side/Back View - Defined middle level. Enlarged interior cavities

Front View - Lower level coming together. Base trimmed. Approx. 750 lbs of stone removed so far.	Side/Back View - Lower level coming together. Sculpture can now be moved more easily.		Front View - Lower level better defined. Sculpture beginning to dance.	Side/Back View - defining where helix terminates into base.

Front/Side View. Base is now 13" x 13". Sculpture now has name: Journey.	Back/Side View Journey has design terminating nicely in base.	Back/Side View Journey's design is ready for sanding.
